The Dallas Cowboys are on the hunt for their next head coach following the departure of Mike McCarthy. With the franchise at a critical juncture, team owner Jerry Jones and the front office are evaluating potential candidates to lead America’s Team into the future. The Cowboys are not alone in their coaching search. Five other teams—the Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Las Vegas Raiders—are also looking to fill head coaching vacancies, increasing the competition for top talent. As speculation mounts, several high-profile names have surfaced as possible hires for Dallas.

One of the most talked-about candidates is Deion Sanders, a former Cowboys great who has been making waves as the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes. While Sanders has yet to prove himself at the professional level, he has generated immense media attention and has energized the college football scene. Sources confirm that Jerry Jones has reached out to Sanders, and discussions are expected to continue. Despite his status as a fan favorite, questions remain regarding Sanders’ readiness for an NFL coaching job. His 13-12 record in college, including a winless bowl game record, has raised doubts. However, his ability to command a locker room and generate excitement around a franchise could make him an attractive option for the Cowboys.

Robert Saleh, former New York Jets head coach, has already interviewed with the Cowboys. Known for his defensive acumen, Saleh previously served as the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator, helping build a formidable defense. His 20-36 record as a head coach in New York is concerning, but his strategic mindset keeps him in the conversation. Another candidate with experience is Mike Zimmer, the Cowboys’ current defensive coordinator, who previously held head coaching duties with the Minnesota Vikings. Zimmer’s familiarity with the organization and his strong defensive record could make him a seamless fit.

Kellen Moore, currently the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, has also emerged as a top contender. Moore previously held the same role in Dallas from 2019 to 2022, making him a familiar face within the franchise. Under his leadership, the Eagles have thrived offensively, reaching the NFC Championship. While Moore lacks head coaching experience, his offensive creativity could be a major asset for the Cowboys. Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator, has two decades of NFL coaching experience. As the son of legendary coach Marty Schottenheimer, he brings a deep understanding of the game. His role in refining the Cowboys’ offense in 2023 could make him a candidate for internal promotion.

Leslie Frazier, a former head coach for the Minnesota Vikings, has been in coaching since the late 1990s and has served under legends like Andy Reid and Tony Dungy. His leadership as a defensive coordinator helped the Indianapolis Colts secure a Super Bowl win in 2007. However, at 65, there are concerns about his ability to adapt to the modern NFL. Aaron Glenn, defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, has gained attention for transforming the Lions’ defense. Despite an injury-plagued season, Glenn led the unit to a top-five ranking in rushing defense. While he lacks head coaching experience, his ability to develop defensive talent makes him an intriguing prospect.

Jason Witten, a former Cowboys tight end and current high school football coach, has been floated as a potential candidate. Witten has achieved impressive success in Texas high school football, winning two state championships with a 38-11 record. Although he lacks professional coaching experience, Jerry Jones has spoken highly of his leadership qualities. Another name surfacing in discussions is Pete Carroll, the former head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Carroll has a Super Bowl championship under his belt and years of head coaching experience. Reports suggest that he has had informal discussions with the Cowboys about the opening.

With multiple candidates under consideration, the Cowboys have a difficult decision ahead. Will they opt for a proven veteran like Carroll, a rising defensive coach like Glenn, or make a splash with Sanders? The search remains fluid, with more interviews expected in the coming weeks. One thing is certain: whoever takes over as head coach will be tasked with leading one of the most scrutinized teams in the NFL. With a passionate fan base and championship aspirations, the Cowboys must get this hire right. The search for the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys continues, and the NFL world will be watching closely as Jerry Jones and his team make their final decision.
