In the wake of a tragic loss, the University of South Florida (USF) community and basketball fans are preparing to honor the life of men’s basketball coach Amir Abdur-Rahim. Two public celebrations of his life will occur in the coming days, including a service at USF’s Tampa campus.

The Tampa service, which will be open to the public, is set for Thursday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Yuengling Center, USF’s primary arena. The university will share additional information regarding the service as details are finalized. This local tribute will provide an opportunity for the USF community, basketball fans, and the general public to pay their respects to a coach who quickly made an indelible mark on the program and the hearts of many.

Before the Tampa service, a similar celebration will be held at Kennesaw State University in Georgia, where Abdur-Rahim coached for four seasons before joining USF. The Kennesaw State service is scheduled for Sunday at 5 p.m. and will be live-streamed on KSUOwls.com for those unable to attend in person. Georgia University played a pivotal role in Abdur-Rahim’s coaching journey, and many there remember him for his leadership, integrity, and the success he brought to their basketball program.

Amir Abdur-Rahim passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Oct. 26, at the age of 43, due to complications from a recent surgical procedure. His sudden death has left the USF community and the wider basketball world reeling in shock and sadness. Abdur-Rahim was poised to enter his second season as head coach of the USF Bulls, having already made significant strides in his short time with the team. During his first season, he led the Bulls to an impressive 25-8 record and guided them to their first-ever regular season conference title in the 2023-2024 season. His impact on the program was immediate and profound, as he brought a new sense of energy, discipline, and determination to the team.

Abdur-Rahim was highly regarded for his coaching abilities and his deep commitment to his players’ development, both on and off the court. His coaching philosophy extended far beyond wins and losses—he sought to build character, foster leadership, and inspire young athletes to excel in all aspects of life. His passion for mentoring and empowering his players left a lasting impact on everyone who crossed his path, from players to colleagues to fans.

Before joining USF, Abdur-Rahim enjoyed a successful stint as head coach at Kennesaw State University in Georgia. At Kennesaw State, he transformed the men’s basketball program, leading the team to new heights and establishing a winning culture that resonated after his departure. Under his leadership, the Kennesaw State Owls became known for their tenacity, strong teamwork, and resilience on the court. Abdur-Rahim’s ability to build successful programs was a testament to his deep understanding of the game and his skill in bringing out the best in his players.

The Abdur-Rahim family, devastated by this sudden loss, has requested that those wishing to honor his memory consider donating to the Future Foundation in lieu of flowers. This nonprofit organization, co-founded by Amir’s older brother, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, is dedicated to addressing poverty and helping youth in underserved communities. The Future Foundation’s mission reflects many values Amir held close throughout his life: a commitment to giving back, uplifting those in need, and making a positive difference in the world.

Amir Abdur-Rahim’s untimely passing has left a void not only in the basketball world but also in those who knew him personally. As a husband and father of three, he was devoted to his family, balancing the demands of his career with his responsibilities at home. Those who knew him best speak of his deep love for his family and the joy he found in spending time with his wife and children.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Abdur-Rahim was known for his infectious enthusiasm, warmth, and generosity. He was a mentor, a friend, and a leader who touched the lives of many with his kindness and selflessness. Abdur-Rahim’s presence was always felt, whether working with players, engaging with fans, or interacting with his colleagues. His ability to connect with people, both on and off the court, earned him the respect and admiration of those around him.

As the USF community prepares to say goodbye to their beloved coach, the celebrations of life in Tampa and Georgia will provide an opportunity to reflect on Abdur-Rahim’s incredible legacy. His contributions to basketball, his dedication to his players, and his commitment to improving the world will not be forgotten.

In the coming days, friends, family, players, and fans will gather to honor a man who lived with passion, purpose, and an unwavering dedication to those he loved. Though his time was cut short, Amir Abdur-Rahim’s impact will continue to be felt for years to come—both in the world of basketball and in the lives of the countless individuals he inspired.
