A 1975 graduate of High Point University, Dr. Woody Gibson was instrumental in the growth and development of intercollegiate athletics at HPU. Gibson coached the Men’s Golf Team from 1975-1992 where he won two Conference Championships, was named Coach of the Year twice, and his team finished 15th nationally in 1991. Gibson added men’s soccer to his coaching resume in 1978 where he amassed a 211-138-27 record. HPU won the North State Conference/CVAC regular season men’s soccer championships five times and won the inaugural conference tournament held in 1989. In addition to men’s soccer and golf, Gibson founded and coached the women’s soccer team from 1992-94. He was the Sports Information Director from 1975-91 and Athletic Director from 1998-2008. During those years, Gibson was also an Associate Professor of Business at the University. In 2011, Gibson was named to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Hall of Fame.
